Twitter Tools to Make Building Your PLN Easy

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Applications to connect and use for Twitter are becoming almost as numerous as applications for the IPhone.  If you plan on using Twitter seriously, the apps below are ones that can make the experience easier, more efficient and fun.  These are all applications I have used and found to be helpful in one way or another.  I’m sure there are lots more but these will get you started using Twitter more efficiently.

If you know of another application that would be good to add here, please let me know.

If you are going to use Twitter a lot, you will eventually want a control deck to manage it all –think of it as Kirk’s command chair on the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek.  What these applications do is allow you to manage multiple Twitter accounts if you have them, organize various columns to view particular groups of your followers, read the tweets of  only the people you select, follow conversations, mentions, and direct messages simultaneously and other helpful features.  I have accounts with 2 sites that provide that kind of organization for Twitter:

Hootsuite

TweetDeck

Sooner or later you will want to send tweets at times when you are not around, awake, or have access to the internet.  The applications below allow you to schedule your brilliant posts to go out when ever you want.  You can also arrange for tweets to repeat.  Think of the possibilities —you’re teaching class and tweeting at the same time!

SocialOomph (used to be TweetLater)

Twit Robot

Your Twitter Karma is a helpful application for following and unfollowing people in large groups.  “Basically, it’s a Flash application that fetches your friends and followers from Twitter when you click the “Whack!” button, then displays them for you, letting you quickly paginate through them. By default, the list contains all your friends and followers and is sorted by last update, showing those who most recently updated first. You can sort the list alphabetically either ascending or descending by Twitter ID. You can filter the list in several ways: only friends or only followers, all friends or all followers, and mutual friends.”

When you want to search for something specifically on Twitter, Twitter’s search engine is invaluable.  Search keywords, #hashtags, people, etc.

One of my favorite applications is the Twitter Toolbar.  You install it as a tool bar and it has a ton of very helpful Twitter resources.

TwitterKeys is a small tool  developed  which provides you with a floating window that has  symbols you can use in Twitter.
